Course Overview |
Venture Capital, Angel Funding and Debt addresses key questions that challenge all entrepreneurs: how much money can and should be raised; when should it be raised and from whom; what is a reasonable valuation of the company; and how should funding be structured? The course comprehensively explores the financial tools needed by an entrepreneur in starting his or her own business. By studying real-life business cases and learning from professors, investors and entrepreneurs, participants gain insight into both the investors’ and entrepreneurs’ points of view in funding a venture. Participants will gain a practical framework they can use to secure or provide investment for high-potential businesses.
Faculty graduates of this program will be able to address critical topics in venture financing by running short-duration courses for both students and entrepreneurs. Graduates should be able to work on:
John W Mullins Professor John Mullins brings to his teaching and research 20 years of executive experience in high-growth firms. He founded two ventures, one of which he took public. His two defining books for entrepreneurs, The New Business Road Test and Getting to Plan B, have received rave reviews in the international business press: INC, America’s top entrepreneurship magazine, recently listed Getting to Plan B as one of the best books for business owners. Prof. Mullins’s research has won him national and international awards from the Young Presidents’ Organization, Marketing Science Institute, the American Marketing Association, and the Richard D. Irwin Foundation. He earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and his PhD in Marketing from the University of Minnesota. Murray B Low Professor Low is an experienced entrepreneur and a leading authority on entrepreneurship in independent, corporate and not-for-profit settings. Starting businesses in several industries led him to study how the entrepreneurial process differs by context. His current research examines the dynamics of entrepreneurial careers. As the founder of the Columbia Entrepreneurship Program, he has worked to make entrepreneurship a viable career option for MBA graduates. Low consults to both small and large companies, family businesses and not-for-profits. He teaches executive seminars in the areas of entrepreneurship and strategic management and makes frequent presentations to academic and industry groups. He has published widely in academic and practitioner journals and is a regular commentator in the media. Recognition and Certification On completion of the course and the specified requirements, successful graduates will be awarded Certification in “Advanced Knowledge: Raising Capital for Entrepreneurial Venture” by NEN in association with the Wadhwani Foundation. Date and Locations Duration: Who Should Apply Given the universal focus on finance by students and entrepreneurs, and their general lack of understanding and knowledge in this area, this course would be useful for faculty working with students or entrepreneurs at any level – not necessarily only advanced students – as the course material can be adapted for all. However, the course is designed for participants who have some background in entrepreneurship, and who wish to advance their knowledge of entrepreneurial finance. Participants who have working knowledge of accounting and basic finance might find they benefit more from this course than those with no background in this area.
