Course Overview

Practical Ethics: Succeeding in a Transparent World is a unique course built on the foundation of “Giving Voice to Values (GVV),” which is an innovative research and curriculum development program housed and supported by Babson College, developed with The Aspen Institute as the Incubator and the Yale School of Management as the Founding Partner. The course is designed to enable the entrepreneur to evaluate the importance of ethics with the goal of identifying and practicing actionable strategies for voicing and enacting value-driven leadership within today’s business context.

Experience and research demonstrate that conflicts with principles and values are bound to occur during the course of a person’s career—those times when what we believe and want to accomplish contradict demands made by clients, peers or managers. By the end of this course, faculty participants will learn how to help individuals build and practice the understanding and skills they need to recognize, speak and act on their values when such conflicts arise. They will be able to transform the foundational assumptions on which the teaching of business ethics is based and more importantly, how to equip emerging business leaders with the knowledge of what is right – but also the ability to make it happen.

Objectives

Successful graduates of this unique course will emerge with the skills, knowledge and confidence to work with students and entrepreneurs on the following:

  • How managers raise values-based issues in an effective manner—what they need to do to be heard and how to take corrective action when necessary
  • The importance of self-assessment and focus on individual strengths when looking for a way to align one’s individual sense of purpose with that of the organization
  • Opportunities to construct and practice responses to frequently heard reasons and rationales for not acting on one’s values
  • Practice in providing peer feedback and coaching
  • Introduction to the GVV/Indian Entrepreneurship curricular development process
